The carrier will reduce its departures from Los Angeles International Airport from about 34 a day to 24, focusing on profitable transcontinental routes that include its Mint business class cabin, according to a memo to staff, which was seen by CNBC. Cuts include service from Los Angeles to San Francisco; Seattle; Miami; Las Vegas; Reno, Nevada; and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Along with transcontinental flying, JetBlue said it will focus on "bread and butter" routes along the East Coast, and those serving Caribbean vacation destinations. JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines on Monday said they are ending their agreement to merge, weeks after losing a federal antitrust lawsuit that challenged the deal. A federal judge in January blocked JetBlue's attempted takeover of budget carrier Spirit after the Justice Department sued to bar the deal last year. The Justice Department alleged the acquisition would stifle competition in the airline industry and eliminate Spirit as a discount alternative for price-conscious travelers. JetBlue and Spirit appealed the judge's decision a couple of days later, but JetBlue noted the appeal was required under the terms of the merger agreement. Spirit shares tumbled 17% in premarket trading, while shares of JetBlue were up roughly 4%.

JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines on Friday said they are appealing a federal judge's ruling issued earlier this week that blocks the two carriers' planned merger on antitrust grounds. Spirit shares extended gains posted during the regular session on Friday, rising more than 10% in after-hours trading, while JetBlue's were little changed.

Andrew Kelly | ReutersAfter years of unbridled consumer spending on everything from home improvement to dream vacations, some companies are now finding the limits of their pricing power. Nike last week lowered its annual sales growth forecast and unveiled plans to cut costs by $2 billion over the next three years. "Goods companies don't have the pricing power they did in the pandemic, and some in the hotel and travel [industries] — they don't have the pricing power they did in the immediate post-Covid," he added. Sales growth for companies in the S&P 500 is on track to average 2.7% this year, according to mid-December analyst estimates posted by FactSet. Consumer spending on apparel and groceries rose 2.4% and 2.1%, respectively, from the year-earlier period, according to the survey.

Former 'American Idol' star Jimmy Levy's bag caught fire while his JetBlue flight sat at the gate. Levy said he was told a portable battery inside his bag had caused the fire. In an interview with NBC News, Levy said he was told by investigators his portable charger was to blame for the explosion. "It's a portable charger from a fancy mall, so it wasn't some random thing," he said. JetBlue didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment but told NBC News in a statement that its crew "immediately responded and addressed the situation, and there were no requests for medical assistance."

JetBlue said it had agreed to transfer two gates in Boston, two gates in Newark, and 43 takeoff and landing authorizations in Newark to Allegiant. A new all-business class airline called BermudAir is launching flights to the US on August 31. BermudAir's jets will start service with 88 coach seats before "Aisle Class" is installed in November. On Thursday, new airline BermudAir officially launched as the archipelago's only carrier flying year-round service to and from the US. The inaugural flight will be on August 31 from Bermuda L.F. Wade International Airport to Boston Logan International Airport, and bookings are now open to the public. However, supply chain issues have delayed the all-business class configuration, so the first few months of flying will see 88-seater jets only filled to half capacity.

An American Airlines plane takes off near a parked JetBlue plane at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on July 16, 2020 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. American Airlines plans to appeal a court's recent ruling that would block its partnership with JetBlue Airways in the Northeast, American CEO Robert Isom said Wednesday. A spokesman for JetBlue declined to comment and didn't say whether the airline also planned to appeal the ruling along with American. U.S. District Judge Leo Sorokin ruled earlier this month that the airlines' partnership in the region is anticompetitive and ordered the airlines to end the partnership in 30 days. American Airlines CFO Devon May said at the same conference on Wednesday that the company didn't expect a material impact this year due to the ruling.

An American Airlines plane takes off near a parked JetBlue plane at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on July 16, 2020 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A federal judge on Friday ordered American Airlines and JetBlue Airways to end their partnership in the Northeast, a win for the Justice Department after it sued to undo the alliance arguing it was anti-competitive. The lawsuit, filed in September 2021, alleged that the airlines' alliance was effectively a merger that would hurt consumers by driving up fares. Fort Worth, Texas-based American Airlines and New York-based JetBlue Airways argued they needed the so-called Northeast Alliance to better compete with other large carriers Delta Air Lines and United Airlines in congested airports in the region. Undoing the partnership would be difficult, especially during the peak summer travel season, which airlines have already sold tickets for.
Ron DeSantis's Tuesday swing through DC, calling it ill-timed, his political resume goofy, and his ongoing fight with Walt Disney World a devastating vanity project. Walt Disney World has roughly 80,000 employees in Florida and is the state's biggest tourist attraction. The Florida governor wasn't being offered much cover by Florida Republicans on Capitol Hill. When another reporter asked whether DeSantis had gone too far by threatening Disney with state prisoners for neighbors, Scott claimed ignorance. "Ron DeSantis is out campaigning outside of the state of Florida and picking fights with Mickey Mouse," Fried said.

Crews had worked through the night to attend rescue calls, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths. Stranded cars littered streets around eastern Broward County, where rains started Monday, with the heaviest downpours coming Wednesday afternoon and evening. Fort Lauderdale City Hall remained closed Thursday with ground-floor flooding and no power. Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport remained closed through at least noon Thursday, with many flights canceled and some passengers stranded. But the entrance to the lower-level, or arrivals, road remained closed, officials tweeted.
Thunderstorms in southeastern Florida dumped 15 to 20 inches of rain in the Fort Lauderdale area on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said, trapping motorists in floodwaters and leaving travelers stranded inside a major airport that had been shut down. But the rain was so heavy that the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport closed. The Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for the Fort Lauderdale area on Wednesday night. Those are reserved for extremely rare situations after heavy rain that lead to torrents of water that pose a severe threat to human life and can cause catastrophic damage. Fort Lauderdale, which lies in central Broward on the Atlantic coast, is one of Florida’s largest cities.

Preliminary reports showed that about 25 inches (64 cm) of rain had fallen in Fort Lauderdale, making it a 1 in a 1,000-year weather event, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. Video footage on social media showed sheets of rain pounding the area as flood waters reached the tops of cars, and people wading through waters. The Justice Department on Tuesday sued to block JetBlue Airways ' $3.8 billion proposed takeover of budget carrier Spirit Airlines , the Biden administration's latest attempt to prevent industry consolidation. Spirit Airlines agreed to sell itself to JetBlue last summer after a long battle for the carrier between JetBlue and Frontier Airlines . A JetBlue-Spirit combination would be the first major U.S. airline merger since Alaska Airlines' takeover of Virgin America in 2016. The Justice Department at the time required Alaska to scale back its code share with American Airlines to clear the deal. Separately, JetBlue is awaiting a ruling on its Northeast partnership with American Airlines, which the Justice Department sued to undo in 2021.
